Trust The Yuma Dentist For Accurate Dental Info

Yuma family dentistry

Dental patients are more informed than ever before and it’s not surprising that much of their knowledge about oral health and dental treatment is gleaned from online sources. Proactive self-education can be beneficial for you and your family, especially if it helps with living a healthy lifestyle. At the Yuma Dentist, we caution our friends and neighbors not to rely on online dental information exclusively; let us  verify its accuracy.

Misconceptions about medical treatment in general, and dentistry in particular, began circulating long before personal computers became ubiquitous. But the web has accelerated the speed and distance they can travel.

Some of the most frequent dental myths are focused on the safety of x-rays, the risk of root canals, the facts about fluoride, and the effectiveness of alternative practices such as oil pulling.

In worst-case scenarios, patients delay or avoid dental treatment because of something they read online. We encourage our patients to bring any concerns to The Yuma Dentist. We’ll help you sort the reliable information from the less-reliable.

At Yuma Family Dentist, we are enthusiastic about keeping your smile healthy and beautiful for life. We provide general and cosmetic dentistry, including dental implants. Schedule your next appointment with us today.

Whitening For 3 Types Of Tooth Stains

Yuma Teeth Bleaching

If your smile could use some brightening, what are you waiting for? Professional teeth whitening by The Yuma Dentist can dramatically improve their appearance.

It is important to realize that not every Yuma smile responds the same to teeth whitening. The degree of whiteness attained and the treatment time necessary depends on the type of stains being treated.

1. Surface or extrinsic stains are the most accessible and easiest to remove. They are caused by the usual suspects: coffee, tea, wine, cola, smoking and the natural aging process.

2. Intrinsic stains can be lightened but it may take a bit longer. These stains form from the inside out but are visible through the enamel. They can be caused by trauma, tetracycline antibiotics, infection, or excessive fluoride use in childhood before the enamel is fully formed.

3. Combination: Some Yuma dental patients have both extrinsic and intrinsic staining. As we age, our teeth change – regardless of how well we take care of them. Two things that work against us is that our enamel thins while the dentin underneath fades and yellows. Again, the extrinsic stains on the enamel are the quickest to lighten, but ongoing treatment with a peroxide-based penetrating whitener can lighten the deeper discoloration.

It is best to trust fast teeth whitening treatment to the care of an experienced practice like The Yuma Family Dentist. We also offer  dental implants. Schedule an appointment today.

Let’s Talk About Your Smile

Let’s Talk About Your Smile

One of the best things about the dental profession is interacting with our patients. During initial dental consultations, we listen carefully to each one’s short and long term dental goals.

We enjoy discussing options and developing effective treatment plans tailored specifically to each person. Some of our patients desire a total smile makeover. We explain in detail the treatments available including teeth whitening, dental veneers, orthodontia, crown restoration, and dental implants.

If a patient is nervous about undergoing treatment, we discuss sedation dentistry. This is a great option for anxious patients. Dental visits do not have to be painful!

After the treatment has been completed, it is very gratifying for us to see our patient’s reaction to their new smile.

If you have been considering a smile makeover, let’s talk about it. Call Yuma Family Dentist to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation.

Missing Teeth and Dental Implants

It’s a deceptively simple idea: replace a missing tooth by attaching an artificial one directly to the patient’s jaw. It’s an idea that has been around for a thousand years or more, but in the last half century, it has become an exact science. Dental implants are one of the specialties offered at The Yuma Dentist.

First, let’s clear up one point: a dental implant refers not to the artificial tooth, but to the titanium post that is embedded in the jaw. It goes where the tooth root used to be, and because of that, helps to prevent bone recession. An artificial tooth sits on top of the post.

A bridge used to be the only real option for people who wanted to replace a missing tooth. Not anymore. The American Dental Association says that dental implants are one of the biggest advances in dentistry. They look and function just like a natural tooth.

Even people who are missing all of their teeth can benefit from dental implants. New, permanent styles of dentures can be supported in the jaw by implants. They are far more secure than traditional dentures.

If you have lost one or more of your natural teeth, dental implants may be just what you’ve been hoping for. Call The Yuma Dentist to see if you are a viable candidate. We also provide general dentistry. Make an appointment with us today.

Does Your Teen Have Unique Dental Challenges?

adolescent dental health

When it comes to oral health, adolescence is a pivotal time for young people. The Yuma Dentist, with offices in Yuma and Fortuna Foothills, can offer some insight.

On the upside, the last of the permanent teeth come in providing young men and women with their “adult smile.” Good habits can be forged and reinforced. Teeth can be corrected with orthodontia, providing increased confidence when it is often sorely needed.

On the downside, some youth take up habits that are harmful to their teeth. Adolescents often don’t understand the importance of proper dental hygiene and how it affects lifelong oral health. Some young Yuma men and women develop teenage tooth decay that can cause recurring dental troubles in later years.

Eating disorders are far too common among Yuma area adolescents. Bulimia can cause enamel erosion, decay, and even complete tooth loss. We strongly recommend parents  to intervene immediately and seek appropriate medical care if they suspect their teen has an eating disorder.

The importance of diet cannot be overstated. Adolescence is a time when many young Yuma men and women decrease their calcium intake – a danger to both bones and teeth. The consumption of energy drinks and sugared soda also contribute to tooth and gum problems in teenagers.

Additionally, adolescents that use tobacco and illegal drugs have an increased risk of tooth decay and oral cancer. Oral piercings can be extremely dangerous. The health risks include tooth and gum damage, infection, allergic reactions, nerve damage, and excessive swelling that can block airways.

Teens who are undergoing orthodontic treatment often have a difficult time properly cleaning their teeth. It is a challenge to fit toothbrush bristles and floss under dental hardware. Toothbrushes and flossing devices that squirt water can help teenagers with braces adequately clean their teeth and gums.

Yuma Family Dentist advises AZ parents to make sure their youth receive twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings. Franklin Hulme can identify and treat oral issues in their early stages so that further damage can be prevented or minimized.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers the following important guidelines for adolescent oral health:

Teens should drink fluoridated water.
Fluoride supplementation is recommended for high risk teens that don’t have access to fluoridated water (up to age 16).
Teens should use fluoridated toothpaste twice a day.
Teens should floss daily.

To schedule a thorough dental examination and cleaning for your teenager, call The Yuma Dentist. We provide general dentistry, dental implants, and more, and are committed to oral health for Yuma area patients of all ages.

This Is The Year For A Beautiful Smile in Yuma!

Winter Haven, CA Cosmetic Dentistry

If you are not familiar with the latest dental advances, you might not realize what cosmetic dentistry can do for you. At The Yuma Dentist, we can transform your smile from ordinary into something beautiful.

Cosmetic dentistry is dedicated to improving the appearance of teeth. The goal is to create positive change to your teeth and smile. Here are just a few of the cosmetic dentistry services that can make a big difference in your appearance:

Teeth whitening. In-office teeth whitening far surpasses anything you can get from a toothpaste tube or whitening strips. We use Glo Whitening that uses LED lights to transform your smile.

Porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers can cover crooked or misshapen teeth, or teeth have have become dull over the years. Veneers have been used for nearly a century.

Dental implants. Missing a tooth? Dental implants look and function like a natural tooth. Because a titanium post is implanted in your jaw, where a tooth root once was, they have the added advantage of preventing bone loss.

We offer the full range of cosmetic dental procedures to provide you with a beautiful smile. Visit our smile gallery to see what cosmetic dentistry from The Yuma Dentist can do for you.

What Is Necessary For A Dental Crown in Yuma?

dental crowns Yuma

Dental crowns have been available in Yuma for a long, long time. But would you believe the procedure itself has been around for a thousand years or more?

Ancient dentists used ivory, bone, and seashells to make crowns for teeth. Evidence of gold crowns dates from 200 A.D. Porcelain crowns appeared in the 1800s. With the advancement of metal casting processes in the 1900s, crown technology took a big leap forward.

A dental crown procedure consists of several steps:

Tooth Preparation
First, the tooth is anesthetized and then prepared. All decay is removed and the tooth is shaped. Usually, the dentist files off tooth structure to reduce the size and create the proper shape.

Sometimes, the tooth is too small to begin with. In that case, the dentist builds up its core with filling material to design a durable base for the crown. All-metal crowns—as opposed to porcelain crowns—have thinner sides, requiring less removal of tooth structure.

Creating a Good Impression
The dentist will use a putty-like substance to create an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth. An impression will also be made of the teeth that oppose the crown. This ensures that the crown does not negatively affect the bite.

The Temporary Crown
A temporary crown is used to safeguard the tooth and be certain it doesn’t move in the mouth while the permanent crown is being created. Patients need to be careful with their temporary crown. It is not as strong as the permanent crown and is attached only with temporary cement. Avoid chewing gum and eating sticky foods. Be aware that the tooth may be sensitive to hot and cold.

Choosing a Color
If the new crown will be constructed with porcelain, you and your dentist will use a shade guide to select a shade for the restoration. Most patients don’t have teeth that are exactly the same color. You will need to ascertain the most appropriate shade to blend in with the surrounding teeth.

The Lab Team Works Its Magic
The dentist or a laboratory technician uses the model to build the crown. Some dentists have the equipment needed to manufacture crowns right in their office. Same day restorations are created with a machine that mills a crown from a small block of ceramic in the correct shade.

Your Crown Is Put In Place

When the new crown is ready, your dentist places it in your mouth and makes any needed modification to attain a great fit. This process shouldn’t be rushed. Sometimes less than a millimeter of drilling can make the difference between an ill-fitting crown that makes irregular contact with the opposing teeth and a crown that is accurately fitted.

The Yuma Dentist provides dental crowns and implants, along with other cosmetic and general dentistry. Call our office today for a consultation or an appointment.

Need a Dental Implant? Yuma Dentistry Can Help

emergency dental Yuma

Getting a tooth knocked out may sound like a catastrophe, but doesn’t always mean you’ll need to call Yuma Dentistry for an implant. If you can keep a cool head and remember a few simple instructions, chances are good your tooth can be saved.

If a tooth gets knocked out, the main things to remember are to find it as quickly as you can, and handle it with care. Be careful to touch it only by the crown – that is, its biting surface.

Next, make a beeline to the nearest dentist.

It’s okay to gently rinse the tooth in water, but don’t scrub it or remove any tissue fragments from the tooth. The best thing to do with it is to hold it back in its socket, but that isn’t always possible.
Holding the tooth between the lip and gum or under the tongue is good too, but be careful not to swallow. If neither of these is an option, place the tooth in a cup of milk.

Time is of the essence. If you can get to a dentist within thirty minutes, great! Most teeth that can be reinserted by a dentist within half an hour can be saved. Chances of saving the tooth are still good if you get there in about an hour. Once you get beyond that time frame, however, chances go down.

If the worst happens, and the tooth cannot be saved, your options include getting a dental implant. This is one of the services provided by Yuma Dentistry. Once rare, dental implants today are considered part of mainstream dentistry.

There are good reasons to  replace a missing tooth with an implant. An implant is a titanium post inserted directly into the jawbone, so it can actually benefit the bone’s health. Cosmetically speaking, they are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

In addition to dental implants, Yuma Dentistry provides general and cosmetic dentistry, all with the latest in dental technology. Call us today to set up an appointment.

Ahead of the Curve: Beautiful Smiles in Yuma

Crown lengthening Somerton

Our dental patients with new, beautiful smiles know about the latest cosmetic dental procedures we use, here at the Yuma Dentist. In this post, we’ll describe a few of them.

At the Yuma Dentist, we stay ahead of the curve with the latest in dental technology. This includes teeth whitening techniques, porcelain veneers, and implant-anchored dentures.

It includes digital X-Rays, too. Digital imaging is not just for Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest. Realtime digital X-Rays we use at Yuma Dentistry help us more easily spot and treat oral problems, including emerging cavities and bone recession. Digital X-Rays require far less radiation exposure than previous X-Ray technology, and are easier to store and access.

Pinpoint-precise Diode lasers are used in myriad procedures including crown lengthening, root scaling, biopsies, root canals, teeth whitening, oral lesion removal, and treatment of dental decay. Laser procedures are easier on the patient and require shorter healing times.

The future of dentistry is here today, at the Yuma Family Dentist.

Missing Teeth? 5 Things You Need To Know About Dentures

implant dentures Yuma

1. Dentures are not the only replacement selection for missing teeth. Dental implants used alone or in combination with a partial denture is often a more effective option for patients. Whereas a removable appliance replaces only the visible parts of teeth, an implant replaces both the root and crown of a tooth. This has critical implications. Dental implants can prevent bone recession that frequently occurs following tooth extractions. Dental implants can provide patients the near-normal ability to chew food and speak.

2. There are more than one kind of denture. Most individuals are familiar with the removable denture that replaces a complete upper or lower arch. There are also partial dentures that are used for patients who have some original teeth. Partial dentures can be permanent in the mouth or removable.

3. Even if you have worn dentures for a while, you may be a good candidate for implant-anchored dentures. The essential factor is whether or not you have enough bone to support an implant. Bone grafting can augment existing bone in some patients. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Franklin Hulme to find out if you are a suitable candidate.

4. Regardless of your tooth replacement configuration—full dentures, partial dentures, or tooth implants—you still need to practice proper oral hygiene. Removable appliances should be cleaned daily.

5. Even if you have no remaining teeth left, it’s crucial that you have biannual dental examinations. Optimal oral health is a fundamental component of overall physical well-being. Dr. Hulme will examine your mouth for indications of diseases like cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes. It is also a good idea for your dentist to examine the condition of your appliance at your visit.

Dr. Franklin Hulme, one of the most experienced and skilled dental professionals in the Yuma area, has proficiency with many tooth restoration procedures. Call 928-257-1392 today to schedule an appointment.
