Focusing On The Top 3 At The Yuma Dentist

porcelain veneers price Yuma

There are three dental health issues that affect as many as a third of all Americans. At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we want all of our patients to have healthy teeth and gums. If any of these common issues affect you, tell us. We can help.

The problems were identified by the Health Policy Institute, which is part of the American Dental Association. In a survey of fifteen thousand people from all walks of life, they asked about problems with teeth and gums.

The top three answers were:

  • Tooth pain
  • Difficulty with chewing
  • Dry mouth

Tooth Pain. When a tooth hurts, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong. The most likely cause of tooth pain is a cavity, but it’s not the only one. It could also be a sign of gum disease, which is one of the leading causes of tooth loss.

Difficulty With Chewing. This too may indicate a cavity, but again, there could be other problems. There may be enamel erosion, a cracked tooth, or recessed gums. It can be serious, because certain foods may be difficult. If you avoid them you could be missing out on important nutrients that your body needs.

Dry Mouth. This, in fact, was the most common issue cited in the survey. It isn’t just a matter of being thirsty all the time. Chronic dry mouth can indicate poor saliva flow. This, in turn, can indicate a systemic condition. Dry mouth is a common side effect from some prescription medications. Poor saliva flow makes you more vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, call us at The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ right away to schedule an appointment and we’ll see what’s going on. We offer general dentistry services, and specialties like dental implants. We have a second office in Fortuna Foothills. Schedule your next cleaning and checkup with us today!

Ouch! Are Your Teeth Sensitive?

Are Your Teeth Sensitive In Yuma?

If you feel tooth sensitivity when you sip coffee or bite into ice cream, The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ is here for you.

Millions of Americans cope with sensitive teeth. Problems with hot and cold foods and drinks are one of the most common complaints. Tactile issues – biting or chewing hard foods – is another.

Fortunately, many cases of sensitive teeth respond to special sensitivity toothpastes. There is a lot to choose from, and most toothpaste brands include a line for this issue. Lots of people report results in as little time as a week or two.

Even if you’re in that lucky group, you should have your sensitive teeth checked by a professional. One of the most common causes of sensitive teeth is enamel erosion, which can expose the dentin. Believe it or not, aggressive brushing or using a hard-bristle toothbrush can lead to enamel erosion, which is why we always recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Other causes of sensitive teeth include:

  • Tooth erosion from highly acidic foods and beverages
  • Tooth decay
  • Receding gums
  • Bruxism (tooth grinding)

The most important thing is to talk to us about it at The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ. We’ll advise you on treatment. Our services include general and restorative dentistry. Call for an appointment today!

Missing Teeth? Dentures And Implants Restore Smiles

Missing Teeth In Yuma? Dentures And Implants Restore Smiles

If you have had years of dental problems or are embarrassed by your teeth, The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ can help you find the restoration procedure right for you. You could be a candidate for complete or partial dentures or dental implants.

Partial dentures fill in the gaps, replacing missing teeth to complete a smile. Partial dentures can prevent natural teeth from moving. Many Yuma dental practices can complete these procedures in one day.

Another alternative is a dental implant. A dental implant is a permanent tooth restoration that is anchored into the jawbone, actually replacing both the root and crown of the tooth. Dental implants prevent bone recession, and can even anchor a full denture arch.

To find out more about dental implants and implant-supported dentures, please schedule an appointment with The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ. We also have an office in Fortune Foothills. Call today!

Think You May Have A Cavity?

white dental fillings Yuma

Your teeth need a lot of tender, loving care. But sometimes, in spite of regular brushing and flossing, we end up with a new cavity – the common cold of dental health. At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we have been filling cavities for years and would be happy to take care of any cavities or other dental issues you are experiencing.

Cavities refer to tooth decay, and it’s a sad fact that few of us go through life without getting at least one. For some children, a cavity is the first health problem they experience.

Cavities are caused when bacteria, acid, food debris, and saliva combine to form plaque. Plaque then clings to your teeth and the acid in the plaque starts to dissolve the enamel. The result is a hole in your tooth.

Typical cavity symptoms include:

  • Toothache
  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold food and drinks

If you notice any of these symptoms, please give us a call.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we offer white fillings that match your teeth. We’re a mercury-free practice with a full range of general dentistry services. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!

6 Easy Ways To Eat Like A Dentist

Somerton cosmetic dental and tooth implants

In this blog post from The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we are talking about nutrition. There is nothing that impacts your smile as much as your eating habits.

1. Rinse after eating

Rinse your mouth with a drink of water or brush your teeth after meals. People who snack all day long subject their teeth to sugars and food debris. Planned meals with brushing in between keeps your oral health on top.

2. Avoid sugary gum

Sugar free gum doesn’t leave sugar to break down on your teeth and jeopardize your hard earned healthy gums. If you are gum chewer, do your smile a favor and go sugarless.

3. Avoid sticky foods

Sticky foods cling to your teeth, which puts you at risk of decay. Toffee, gummy candy, fruit snacks, even excessive dried fruit can be concerning for smiles. Brushing doesn’t always remove the obstinate particles, so be sure to floss after eating sticky stuff.

4. Consume nutritious foods

A balanced diet with a variety of vitamins and minerals can keep the immune system sturdy and able to combat infection.

5. Say ‘cheese!’

Cheese contains calcium and protects teeth from acid that weakens tooth enamel. (Don’t go overboard, since cheese is high in fat.)

6. Avoid acidic foods

Acid will eat away enamel over time: lemons, red wine, soda pop. Limit direct, constant, consistent exposure. All things in moderation.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we want all our patients to enjoy healthy teeth and gums, and beautiful smiles. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Call us to schedule your next checkup today!

An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush

An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush Yuma

In this post from The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we highlight simple things you can do with your toothbrush to keep your mouth as clean and healthy as possible.

One of the most important habits anyone can form is to always let their toothbrush completely air dry between uses. The best way to do this is to place it in a toothbrush holder on the counter with the bristles pointing up. This is much better than sticking it away in a drawer, since it will take longer to dry in there.

Also, when you travel make sure your toothbrush is dry before you seal it away in a travel container.

A good strategy is to buy two toothbrushes. Then alternate between them so each one has time to fully dry out between uses.

Additional Tips

We also recommend (very highly) that you replace your toothbrush every three months or so. You don’t need to mark your calendar or set up an alert on your phone, but try to keep track of how long you’ve been using one.

While we’re at it: use a soft-bristled toothbrush. They’re much easier on your gums.

Should you use a manual toothbrush, or an electric one? That is a topic unto itself, and  we’ll save it for a future blog post.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. So brush and floss daily and follow the tips in this post. Our services include general and restorative dentistry. Schedule your next checkup today!

Amazing Dental Implants

Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental implants are an ideal tooth replacement for people who are missing one or more of their natural teeth, and they’re available at The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ.

A dental implant is a metal post, usually titanium, that is inserted into the bone to replace the missing root. For a single implant, a crown and supporting structure are securely and permanently attached to the post.

Multiple dental implants, usually four, are enough to support a set of dentures.

The reason titanium is usually used is that it is so well-tolerated by the human body. There are very few instances of rejection. Dental  implants offer a long-term solution to tooth loss.

Are you a good candidate for implant surgery? Because the titanium post is anchored into the jaw bone, it is important that you have enough healthy bone at the implant site. We can determine if you do. Age is rarely a factor. Dental implants have been successful for people of all ages.

To find out more about dental implants from The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, please give our office a call. We offer complete general dentistry services, and have a second office in Fortuna Foothills. Schedule an appointment today!

Getting Ready For A Dental Implant?

dental implant cost Foothills

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma, AZ, we believe everyone deserves a sensational smile. This blog post concentrates on the preparation necessary for a dental implant.

What is a dental implant?

Simply stated, a dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone with attached abutment and artificial tooth. An implant can also support a dental bridge or denture.

Who can benefit from dental implants?

Ideal candidates for a dental implant include patients with missing teeth, dentures, or bridges who have healthy oral tissue, adequate bone structure, and proper health for bone healing. For most of our patients who seek tooth restoration, a dental implant is a great option.

How do I care for dental implants?

Caring for implants is not much different than caring for natural teeth. Be sure to avoid damaging, harmful habits such as chewing hard items (ice or candy), and seek treatment for teeth grinding if it is a problem for you. See your dentist regularly. Keep the implant and gum tissue around the implant clean just as you (hopefully) do with your existing teeth.

The total process can take a few months from initial consultation to the placement of the abutment and artificial tooth.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, dental implants are one of our restorative dentistry procedures. We also have an office in Fortuna Foothills. Please call to schedule an appointment today.
