Live Better With Dental Implants

Yuma Implant DentistryIll-fitting dentures can result in more issues than they solve. If you live with loose dentures, you probably regard them as a necessary evil. Implant-supported dentures from The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ are a major step forward in tooth replacement.

Missing Out on Life?

Unfortunately, many disheartened denture wearers have stopped dining in restaurants or engaging in social activities because they are afraid their dentures will slide around.

Implant-supported dentures are a total game-changer. Their benefits include:

  • Stability. They are stable because the implant is anchored in the bone.
  • Bone health. They prevent bone loss that can develop when teeth are removed.
  • Comfortable. They do not irritate gums.
  • Permanent. No denture adhesive is necessary.

Get Your Life Back

Do you want to eat normally again? What is the value of preserving your facial shape? Can you put a price on confidence?

Are You Getting Your Dose Of D?

pediatric dentist

This message from The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ is a reminder of the importance of Vitamin D. Are you getting enough?

Most people know that Vitamin D is essential for healthy teeth and bones, but many of us fail to get adequate amounts.

Here is a sampling of Vitamin D findings, gleaned from a few quick Google searches:

“Several recent reports demonstrate a significant association between periodontal health and the intake of Vitamin D.”

“Researchers who took a second look at a series of clinical trials conducted on 2,000 children in several countries between the 1920s and 1980s determined Vitamin D — which we often garner from sunlight — was associated with around a 50 percent reduction in the incidence of tooth decay.”

“Inadequate Vitamin D levels in pregnant women may be associated with dental caries in their children during the first year of life.”

“The sun is an excellent source of Vitamin D, but it is hard to quantify how much Vitamin D you get from time in the sun and the risk of skin cancer may outweigh the benefits. Food first, says Baylor College of Medicine dietitian Keli Hawthorne. “Supplements can fill in the gaps but it is always better to try to meet your nutritional needs with foods that contain fiber, phytonutrients, and so much more.”

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ we encourage our patients to practice preventative medicine by eating a healthy diet complete with all vital nutrients. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry, and we also have an office in Fortuna Foothills. Call for an appointment today!

Take Care Of Your Toothbrush!

Yuma Dental Patients Take Care Of Your Toothbrush!

The common household toothbrush. Every home has at least one, and at The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we hope our patients are all brushing their teeth after each meal. Regular brushing and flossing are still the most important things you can do for your dental health.

It has been said that each toothbrush can contain millions of bacteria. But when you’ve got a healthy immune system, they pose no threat.

That said, a few common-sense tips might keep any unnecessary germs from affecting your toothbrushes.

  • Be sure to store your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible, and close the toilet lid before flushing. Each flush of the toilet releases a spray of bacteria into the air, so it’s best to just eliminate the spray.
  • Bacteria like a moist environment, so store your toothbrush upright so it can dry completely between uses.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months.

Brushing and flossing are the key to good dental health, and doing both each day will keep your risk for gum disease, cavities, and bad breath low.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, your dental health is our top priority every single day. Services include general and restorative dentistry. We also have an office in Fortuna Foothills. Schedule your next cleaning and checkup today!

A Smile Like A Precious Gem

porcelain veneers price Yuma

Do you have a missing tooth you would like to replace? While there is more than one option available, dental implants from The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ are state-of-the-art in tooth replacement.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants have been hailed as one of the great advances in the field of dentistry, and with good reason.

Dental implants are titanium posts placed into the jaw. The posts fuse with your jawbone to form a solid anchor for a restoration.

A single implant can support one artificial tooth, while several can support a bridge or dental arch.

The great thing about dental implants is that they function like  natural teeth. The titanium post integrates with the bone so well that the body seldom recognizes them as a foreign object. Implants have a success rate of greater than ninety percent.

Conventional dentures may be more affordable than implant-anchored dentures. But because they are removable, most patients find them unreliably loose. They can also affect the ability to enjoy food. These are not issues with implant-supported dentures.

Dental implants from The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ are the closest thing to getting back a natural tooth. Find out more by scheduling a consultation today. We also have complete general dentistry services. Call today!

The Yuma Dentist Treats Canker Sores, Lesions, And Fever Blisters

The Yuma Dentist Treats Cankers Sores Lesions and Fever Blisters

At The Yuma Dentist, one of the most common complaints we hear from patients is problems with mouth sores.

There are many different kinds of oral lesions which can make eating and talking painful. Some are annoying yet harmless, while other sores are more serious and require medical intervention.

Though not contagious, the most common complaint is canker sores, which affect an estimated eighty percent of the Foothills population. Canker sores can be attributed to stress, tissue irritation, or acidic foods.

Dr. Franklin Hulme can prescribe a topical dental paste to relieve pain and guard against infection. Recurring canker sores can sometimes be a symptom of a larger health problem.

Another common complaint is fever blisters or cold sores, which are contagious fluid-filled blisters. Yuma cold sore sufferers should be aware that they can become infected. At The Yuma Dentist, we advise our patients on how to treat cold sores and avoid further breakouts.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ we offer complete general dentistry services, along with restorative dentistry and much more. Call for an appointment today!

A Dentist’s Indispensable Tool: The X-ray

Foothills cosmetic dental and tooth implants

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, providing first rate dental care is much easier when we have extensive information about our patients’ dental health.

Pictures are more accurate than written notes. Since they show what’s going on below the surface, they’re worth even more than a thousand words. Along with a thorough visual oral exam, most dentists want complete and up-to-date X-rays.

There are several types of x-rays:

  • Bite-Wing x-rays give us a picture of the upper and lower back teeth. We can see how they touch each other and see if there is any decay.
  • Panoramic x-rays give us the big picture: a view of the teeth, jaws and jaw joints, nasal area, and even the sinuses. These are especially useful if we think the patient may need orthodontics or a dental implant.
  • Occlusal x-rays show us the floor of the mouth, and the bite of the upper or lower jaw. They’re good for showing the development of children’s teeth, both the baby and permanent teeth.

How often we take X-rays is largely determined by your age as well as the state of your dental health. Because children are growing and experience more changes to their teeth, they usually need X-rays more frequently.

Should you worry about X-rays? They use radiation, but are designed to minimize patient exposure. Patients only get negligible amounts, making them safe. The latest generations of x-rays reduce radiation even more. Still, we take the added safety measure of covering the patient with a heavy leaded apron and collar.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we are committed to providing the best possible dental care. Our services include general and restorative dentistry. We also have an office in Fortuna Foothills. Schedule an appointment with us today.

3 Tips To Make Brushing Count

Somerton affordable family dentist

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ we are big advocates of good dental health, and really promote regular brushing and flossing. Since we’re a dental practice that should come as no surprise.

Many of our patients bring questions with them to their checkups, like which toothpaste to use or proper tools and techniques. We think that’s great, since we are all about educating our patients. Some of our answers are as easy as 1-2-3.

1 Soft Bristle Toothbrush

We strongly recommend gentle brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush. It will clean your teeth and massage your gums. There is never a good reason to use hard or medium bristle toothbrushes.

2 Minutes of Brushing and Flossing

Visualize your mouth in four sections and spend a good 30 seconds in each one. Get the chewing surfaces, the inside surfaces, the outside surfaces and gently brush the gums. Be sure to pay attention to the far side of the back tooth. It’s never visible but can collect food and allow tooth decay to begin.

Take two minutes to floss after brushing in the evening. You’ll remove any debris the toothbrush couldn’t get.

3 Times a Day

Brushing after every meal should remain the goal. This is difficult if you aren’t home for the midday meal. To maintain good dental hygiene, brushing is priority one.

There are as many toothpaste choices out there as you have teeth. Choose the flavor you like best, but be sure it has fluoride and carries the American Dental Association seal.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, the dental health of each of our patients is always our top priority. Services include general and restorative dentistry. We also have an office in Fortuna Foothills. Call for your next checkup today!

Focusing On The Top 3 At The Yuma Dentist

porcelain veneers price Yuma

There are three dental health issues that affect as many as a third of all Americans. At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we want all of our patients to have healthy teeth and gums. If any of these common issues affect you, tell us. We can help.

The problems were identified by the Health Policy Institute, which is part of the American Dental Association. In a survey of fifteen thousand people from all walks of life, they asked about problems with teeth and gums.

The top three answers were:

  • Tooth pain
  • Difficulty with chewing
  • Dry mouth

Tooth Pain. When a tooth hurts, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong. The most likely cause of tooth pain is a cavity, but it’s not the only one. It could also be a sign of gum disease, which is one of the leading causes of tooth loss.

Difficulty With Chewing. This too may indicate a cavity, but again, there could be other problems. There may be enamel erosion, a cracked tooth, or recessed gums. It can be serious, because certain foods may be difficult. If you avoid them you could be missing out on important nutrients that your body needs.

Dry Mouth. This, in fact, was the most common issue cited in the survey. It isn’t just a matter of being thirsty all the time. Chronic dry mouth can indicate poor saliva flow. This, in turn, can indicate a systemic condition. Dry mouth is a common side effect from some prescription medications. Poor saliva flow makes you more vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, call us at The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ right away to schedule an appointment and we’ll see what’s going on. We offer general dentistry services, and specialties like dental implants. We have a second office in Fortuna Foothills. Schedule your next cleaning and checkup with us today!
